What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console — TAP-ONE Glossary

A free Google tool showing how a website performs in search results — clicks, impressions, and indexing issues.

Last updated: 8 August 2026

Google Search Console (opens in new tab) is a free tool that shows exactly how a website appears and performs in Google Search — which queries it ranks for, how many clicks and impressions each page gets, and any indexing or technical errors Google has detected.

Why It’s Worth Checking Regularly, Not Just Once

Search Console surfaces real, specific search queries a business is already ranking for, often revealing phrasing or topics nobody anticipated customers would use. It also flags indexing problems, like a page accidentally blocked from search, early enough to fix before the issue causes real, sustained traffic loss.

It’s a free tool directly from Google, which makes it a reasonable first stop for diagnosing why a specific page isn’t showing up before assuming something more complicated is wrong.

Verifying ownership of a website in Search Console is also usually the very first step required before submitting a sitemap or requesting reindexing of an updated page.

What is the difference between Google Analytics and Search Console?

Analytics tracks what visitors do after they arrive on your site; Search Console tracks how your site performs within Google Search itself, before a visitor even clicks through.
