What is Google Maps Ranking?

Google Maps Ranking — TAP-ONE Glossary

A business’s position among competitors when it appears in Google Maps search results.

Last updated: 8 August 2026

Google Maps ranking refers to where a business appears relative to competitors in Maps search results and the local map pack, determined by proximity to the searcher, relevance to the search term, and prominence (reviews, citations, and profile completeness) — factors BrightLocal (opens in new tab) regularly benchmarks across industries.

Maps Ranking Is Personal, Not Fixed

Unlike a typical organic search ranking, Maps ranking shifts depending on exactly where the person searching is standing, since proximity is recalculated per search. A business can rank first for someone nearby and much lower for someone across town searching the same term, which is why ranking checks done from a single location can be misleading about overall visibility.

This is also why rank-tracking tools built for organic search results often struggle to give a useful single number for Maps ranking — it genuinely varies by searcher location in a way regular search results don’t.

Checking ranking from a few different points around a service area, rather than only from the business’s own address, gives a far more realistic picture of what customers actually see.

What is the single biggest factor in Google Maps ranking?

There is no single biggest factor — proximity, category relevance, and review-driven prominence work together, and improving any one without the others produces limited gains.
