What is the Google Map Pack?

Map Pack (Local 3-Pack) — TAP-ONE Glossary

The set of three local business listings Google shows at the top of relevant search results, with a map.

Last updated: 8 August 2026

The map pack (also called the "local 3-pack") is the block of three business listings, along with a map, that Google displays prominently at the top of search results for local queries like "salon near me". Ranking in the map pack drives significant visibility, a pattern BrightLocal (opens in new tab) tracks closely in its annual local search studies, since most users click one of these three results before scrolling to standard organic listings below.

Why Only Three Spots, and Why They Matter So Much

Google limits the map pack to three listings deliberately, which makes those three spots disproportionately valuable compared to organic results below them, where users have to scroll and compare many more options. In practice, most local searches never make it past the map pack at all — the searcher calls, taps directions, or clicks through to one of the three profiles shown and never reaches page one of standard results.

The Same Three Signals as Local SEO, Applied Directly

Map pack ranking runs on the same relevance, distance, and prominence signals used across local SEO generally — it’s not a separate ranking system, just the most visible expression of it. Distance is fixed at the moment of any individual search, but relevance (an accurate category) and prominence (reviews, citations, profile completeness) are both within a business’s direct control.

What Doesn’t Work

Paid ads can place a sponsored pin above the map pack in some searches, but that’s a separate placement, not the organic three-pack itself — the actual map pack spots cannot be purchased directly, only earned. Businesses hoping to buy their way into the map pack are targeting the wrong lever; the return usually comes from sustained review growth and profile completeness instead.

What to Check First If a Competitor Consistently Outranks You

  • Compare review count and recency, not just star rating, side by side
  • Check whether their primary category is more specific or better matched to the search term
  • Look at how complete their profile is — photos, posts, services filled in versus left blank
  • Confirm your own NAP consistency isn’t quietly working against you across other listings

People also ask

How do I rank in the Google map pack?

Map pack ranking is driven by proximity to the searcher, category relevance, and prominence — which includes review volume, review recency, and overall profile completeness.

Can I pay to appear in the map pack?

Google Ads can place a sponsored pin above the organic map pack in some searches, but the three organic map pack spots themselves cannot be bought — only earned through relevance and prominence signals.
